SG 150/25: CEN Releases Revised EN 71-14:2025 for Household Toy Trampolines, Key Updates for Export Enterprises

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has published a revised standard for household toy trampolines – EN 71-14:2025, which updates the requirements for such products. It should be noted that this standard is a revised version formulated in response to the "Standardization Request" – an agreement between the European Commission and CEN/CENELEC that defines the standardization work program. Compared with the previous version EN 71-14:2018, there are no major technical changes in the 2025 version.

An overview of the core changes in EN 71-14:2025 is as follows: First, regarding the exemption requirements in EN 71-1, the exemptions from some requirements in EN 71-1 have been deleted, as these exemptions have now been transferred to the revised prEN 71-1:2025. This is only a structural adjustment without any technical impact. Second, the requirements related to pinching and crushing hazards have been slightly revised, with clearer guidance on such risks for bystanders, focusing on minimizing access to springs (A2 and A6). Third, the requirements for warnings, markings and instructions have been updated to further improve the clarity and comprehensiveness of safety prompts. Fourth, the installation instructions for in-ground trampolines have been standardized, clearly requiring excavation of holes according to the manual and contacting professional personnel for operation when necessary.

It is particularly important to note that EN 71-14:2025 is not currently harmonized, meaning it has not yet been published in the Official Journal of the EU as a standard that can be used to demonstrate compliance with the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. At present, there is no official information on when this standard will be harmonized or when the transitional period will end.

Industry insiders and testing institutions such as SGS remind that although there are no major technical changes, export enterprises still need to pay close attention to the progress of standard harmonization and do a good job in preliminary adaptation. Enterprises should sort out the relevant changes in exemptions, pinching and crushing requirements, and warning information in a timely manner, and revise product labels, packaging and instructions accordingly. SGS, which has a global network of toy laboratories and EU Notified Bodies in France and Germany, emphasizes that it will keep the industry updated on changes to the EN 71 series standards due to the Standardization Request. For enterprises deeply engaged in the European market, cooperating with professional testing institutions to carry out compliance verification in advance is an effective way to avoid trade risks. Accurately grasping the dynamic changes of standards and doing a good job in proactive adaptation is not only a key measure to protect the safety of children and the reputation of the brand, but also an important guarantee for smooth market access in Europe.
